Silver plated Glass Cruet. Caduceus mark?
« on: November 16, 2005, 11:14:18 PM »
I'm not sure if the condiments are hand blown or pressed. There are ripples on the base of the condiment so I presume they are hand blown. The metal seems to be Silver plate but I'm not very sure of that and strangely, it is crased in places.

There is a Caduceus mark to the base (A symbolic staff surmounted by two wings and entwined with two snakes).

A monogram is present above this which may read: "HK" or "HC".

Below the shield there is what looks like a mark that has been scratched out.

I can think of only two reasons for this.
1) It is German and was rubbed out during the war.
2) A dealer scratched it out to fool a buyer into thinking it's something better.

As you can see it looks like a hat with wings

Any clue on maker, age or anything else very much welcome.  :)

BTW, people do the strangest things. I've seen people covering up Poole marks with Marks and Spencers labels.

I thought to myself, this M&S dolphin looks very well made. It took me another day to figure it out.

And then there was silence.

And more silence....  :)

Hi Tiger  :D

I had a pretty good look around Google for you (expect you've done that though) and didn't come up with much.  I really thought it would be 'findable'.  Odd, isn't it?

Perhaps it could be the stamp of ownership?  Perhaps a hospital or other pharmaceutical business?  Long shot really.   :?

Hi,
By regulation, the Cadeusa has, since 1902, been the insignia of the medical branch of the U.S. army. Maybe a remnant from the American troops stationed over there at some point.

  Just a thought.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

What is at the top of the cadeusa? Can you do a close up please.

Was used by Carl Meltzer & Co Bohemia from 1900.

Re the glass bits - those at the front are certainly not pressed.  They look machine blown to me, but can't be sure without seeing the top.  Compare the curved bit at the base with that of, e.g., a square sauce bottle.

Thank's for all the replies.  :)

All my sauce bottles are round.

Two lines on the two sides can be seen. They probably run down the corners but are hidden.

A ripple

Again, two lines are present, these are on the rim but on the outside only. There are no lines anywhere else.

I've updated the picture of the mark in my first post above. It looks like a hat with wings.

They are certainly mould blown.  I would guess on some sort of simple machine.
