Blue pink fluted vase, polished pontil, Murano??
« on: March 17, 2010, 05:15:42 PM »
I got this vase with 3 other good Murano pieces, and rather put it aside, but its grown on me,
just thinking of selling it, and having second thoughts. Its good quality and id overlooked it
11 1/2 inches tall, 5 ribs, polshed pontil mark, and some good age wear , so im thinking 50s 60s,
maybe Italian or maybe somewhere else ?
The colours are vibrant and an unusual combination,
Any suggestions??
Cheers
Andy

Andy:

I think Murano is strong possibility. The Jordan's Importing catalogue for 1959 shows very similar vases with four lobes and fins. They came in a choice of several "duo-tone" colours. The catalogue for 1958 has slightly different models, but in three colours. Shannon (Shandiane) has a modified version on her JI site at http://gallery.blancoglass.com/v/J+I_Co_Glass/3a62_1_sbl.JPG.html. The one in the catalogue is much closer to your one. The one thing that worries me is the colour combination. I wonder what Anita and Shannon think? Come to think of it, I haven't seen Shannon's name on the board for a while.

BTW I'm not saying it is JI Co., just that since JI got glass from Murano that's very close to your piece, then there's a good chance that yours was made in Murano.

Thanks David,
nice examples on Shannons site  ;)
I take it JI imported to the UK aswell as north America?
As you say, colours are quite unusual , its a bit like a WF Kingfisher blue.
I will leave it on this board for a little while and then ask for a transfer to the Murano board.
Cheers

I don't think they did Andy. Although they did have a manufacturing operation in Murano, they also bought stuff from other compamies that probably wasn't exclusive

Andy:

Christine is right. JI didn't import to Britain, being a US company. Some pieces may have made it across, but I was suggesting the same things as Christine: that your piece came from a company that might have made JI's products.

12 years later. This vase is almost definitely Japanese. Hineri, Iwatsu ( I think the same company 🤔)
