WMF Wiedmann candle holders? Please help :)
« on: March 25, 2010, 08:48:28 AM »

Hello!

I was wondering if anyone could help me ID these two heavy glass handle holders.  I believe the smaller one (10cm high) is a Wiedmann design for WMF.  Its got a beautiful amber color with blues and greens.  It’s been in my possession for about 25 years.

Recently, I came across the larger one.  It shares the same beautiful amber color with the blues and greens.  It’s 14,5cm high.  Could this also be WMF glass?

I’ve searched for information on the Internet, but haven’t come across any candleholders such as these, with one exception:  http://www.liveauctioneers.com/item/2134602

I’d appreciate any information.

P.S.  Please be gentle and patient with me.  I’m just beginning my journey into glass collecting.  Maybe one day, I will be able to help answer people’s questions rather than just keep asking for information

Hi and welcome, Anik!

I think you´re right about the Wiedmann attribution, but as far as I know, they were designed during
his work with Gralglashütte Fischer & Seyfang. Unfortunately there´s close to zero information available,
but a visit to the Gralglas Museum in Dürnau is on my to-do-list.
BTW got one of those, too. I´ll post a picture this evening, as I´m @work right now.

Cheers,
Dirk

Thank you, Dirk!

So 'Ikora' has nothing to do with these candle holders?  I think I'd better change my photo captions  ;)

I will try to find information on Gralglashütte Fischer & Seyfang...  thank you so much for the lead!

Wishing you all the best

Oh dear...  it just shows how little logic I have, or how 'dim' I can be...  In the link I attached to my first post, it says 'Gral-Glashütte, Düren' -- Why was I so stuck on WMF/Ikora?  How embarassing  :-[

Hello Anik - I'd just like to say "Welcome"! :fwr:
I can't help with your gorgeous glass, (though Ikora is wrong for these) here or the wonderful green bottle, I will be watching with interest, I want to know what these are too - you clearly have an "eye" for lovely things.
(had a wonderful week in Krakow a few years ago - beautiful city).

Thank you, Sue!  It makes me feel so happy that someone appreciates my 'pieces' -- my husband only sees lumps of glass and no beauty  :spls:

All the best to you!

... they are indeed lovely! Wish I´d find another one. The only reference I could find seems to be the same as
yours, from another auction house:

Here´s mine, it´s ca. 9,5cm tall and 12cm wide:

Oh Dirk, your blue one is ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!!  What a stunning piece!!!  Do you know what other colors they were made in?

I'm so pleased to hear that my candle holders are indeed Wiedmann.  I think I made a good buy with the larger one...  I bought it about 3 months ago on Allegro (something like eBay) for 130 PLN -- about 33 Euro (shipping included).  The seller, in his description, said it was probably a Murano piece...   ;D

How lovely!

Sorry, I must admit, that the four examples in this thread are 66,67% of all I´ve ever seen
of these. The two remaining (just in case you were just searching for your calculator) were
in a similar blue to mine and ~ equal to the one in the link.
Unfortunately my camera doesn´t do to well with different shades of blue. In fact it´s a bit
more ultramarin than it appears in the photos, which makes it even more attractive IMHO.
Thanks for your nice comment, Anik! Yours BTW have the most extensive use and vivid
colours of powder decoration I´ve seen - thanks for sharing!
