Davidsons,colour question....
« on: April 13, 2010, 05:52:47 PM »
With the rd number 130643(1889) I was surprised to find this was Geo' Davidsons,is this a common colour for them or haven't I seen enough of their glass?

Peach is a Davidson colour, although I suspect the colour is younger than the design. Can't look in my book; it's under dust sheets.

Keith — Peach was only used for a short time pre-war and only for a few patterns, see http://www.cloudglass.com/Davidsonbetweenwars.htm — scroll down to about the middle of this web page.

Your vase is much more likely to date from Davidson's reintroduction of a number of Victorian styles in the 1960s.

Hello

Davidson introduced their Patent Rose in 1896 (Slack, English Pressed Glass, p 79).  Slack quoted the following from the Pottery Gazette "Their latest novelty is what they call their Patent Rose Glass.  This is a very delicate colour - something of a pale ruby."  I have several pieces of it and in reality it is a slightly orangey pink.  I suspect your piece is from this time period and not later.

Thanks for the replies,Christine,Bernard,Sid,so it's somewhere between Queen Vic' and Cliff Richard,no matter,it wasn't until it had a wash that I realised the 'ribs' were 'pink' and the panels clear,ta ,

Keith — No, it's late Victorian, as Sid says.   Sorry about that error.   Slack is an obvious and important omission from my little library, which I hope to rectify some time.

I saw Raymond Slack again at a boot sale last Sunday - am sure he will feel proud that his book is still held in very high esteem.

Your panels can't be clear, they must be pink/peach, just not as thick as the ribs. (On my Pearline sugar bowl in this pattern, they're about half as thick.)
