signature has me stuck ID = Con Rhee
« on: April 19, 2010, 05:55:37 AM »
My daughter and I had a girls day out doing a run of charity shops and armed with some more knowledge of glass I picked up this.  It has writing but I am stumped as to who it is.the plate is about 30cm in diameter and has a brown swirl in the middle
Any helpers, I would be very grateful

I think 83 is more likely to be the date for 1983.
I don't recognise the signature but then you are in Aus and it may be a studio artist from
Aus or NZ perhaps.
It looks like it starts with a B as far as I can see.

good luck looking :) and hope you are successful in finding the maker

Probably Australian studio glass. I've looked through the list of Jam Factory Alumni (the Jam Factory being the most significant Australian school and studio), but I couldn't see any names that seemed to match. (there are lots of famous makers in that list, starting with Sam Hermann and through to  Nick Mount, Matt Larwood, even Eileen Gordon).

There's also the Ausglass site, which has lists of active studio glassmakers. It couldn't be Keith Rowe, could it? http://www.krglass.com/index.html You'd have to email him to find out, but it's the closest signature match I can find. It may be way off the mark.

Later: No, I take that back. Very unlikely that signature is "Rowe".

I read the signature as "RW?" and there is a mention in the Ausglass archives of 1983 of a Richard Whiteley.  A new one to me.

I went to the art glass sight and glass artists of australia and no one has any idea.
So that tells me something even if by elimination. I think/ :spls:

That seems to be correct.  I have this Con Rhee vase.  Seems he liked brown as a working colour.

To update Cathy's previous link (now broken) then the Jam Factory's Alumni are listed here. In fact, Peter Tysoe worked or taught here from 1985–94.
