NEGC meets China

I am fairly sure that this paperweight is Chinese 1930s, rather than antique American. Any else have views on the attribution?

I am in complete agreement, Alan. There is a photo of a very similar weight on pg. 126 of "Paperweights for Collectors" by LH & LP Selman. The asking price could use a 'small' adjustment, I would think.

Hi Alan,

I have never seen a Chinese paperweight with facets like this before. Was the paperweight cut like this originally, do you think? It is a very nice Chinese 'fake' in any event.

I think this was facetted like this when it was made in order to match a very specific NEGC design.

Hi Sophie

These weights are pretty rare - a couple have come up in Selman auctions in the past 5 years. But the cutting is standard for these Chinese versions of the NEGC nosegay and Baccarat pansy (see example below).  It is based on the NEGC facetting with intermediate 'crow's feet' cuts.

I have a spare NEGC nosegay copy if you are interested!

Hi Alexander,

Thanks for this. It is interesting to see that they invested a lot of effort/energy in their 'fakes'.

Hi Alan,

Thank you for this. It is a really nice weight. Also, thanks for the offer but I am still broke (and I want the one on Ebay really - but for a tenth of the price!!! ;D)

Sophie

PS: It looks as if I will be able to make it to Godstone. I will bring the weights.
