An ID for this mottled green glass vase please
« on: May 27, 2010, 05:33:59 PM »
Hi guys,
Can anyone ID this vase for me please ~ picked it up in a mixed auction lot and am hoping that somebody may say Monart/Vasart, but don't suppose I'll be that lucky!! It's about 6.5"/16.5cm tall, 7.375"/18.5cm in diameter at the rim and 4"/10cm in diameter at the foot. Ground and polished pontil mark and, when tapped, rings like it's lead crystal. Have seen similar shapes/finishes on eBay sold as Monart/Vasart, but would like know for sure what it is.
Any help would be very much appreciated. Thanks, John.

Hmmm....Well, before I clicked on the image of the pontil (I started with that one) I thought 'Nazeing', but that ain't theirs. However, it is S&W's from the 1930's.

There are other topics, with different shapes in the series, on the GMB.

Cheers, Nigel

PS. John, can you email me direct please? Thanks, :)

Did Nazeing never cut and polish their pontil scars ? I have 7 items which I have always thought to be Nazeing, (they tend to be poorly finished ! ), in opaque bright orange, light green and dark green bubbled texture, and they all have cut and polished pontil scars.
I don't mind being wrong, I like the idea of owning some S & W.

Yes I can help!

It is definitely Nazeing Glass not Monart or vasart, made here at Nazeing circa 1935. We have the original catalogue drawing  Ref 46/2and samples in our Glass Museum, in sherwood green bubbled, mottled glass. I assume it is slightly rough on the inside!
Glad to help

Stephen,

I'm afraid that I have to disagree with you :o

This vase belongs to the group of glass that was taken out of the Nazeing room and placed under Stevens & Williams when Geoff Timberlake, Paul and Christina and I came to assist with identification. If you take a look at photo 4 above showing the pontil you will see it ain't the same as any Nazeing art glass wares. There are a number of other characrteristics that also take it away from Nazeing Glass and place it under the group of wares made by Stevens & Williams for Elwell as seen in the Stevens & Williams Description Books held at Broadfield House Glass Museum.

You will recall that there were also a goodly number of duplicated vases from this range in the Elwell 'find' from a couple of years back.

Nigel
