date please for Jacobean tankard.
« on: September 18, 2010, 05:01:57 PM »
Bit of a shock finding a piece of Jacobean in amber  -  it's usually shed loads in clear.   Funny the things that you pick up on, that tell you immediately something is worth looking at, and with these things its the 'notched' top of the handle (and of course the typical 'panelled' appearance).   4.1/8 inches/105mm.    Is this likely to be pre 1932 Davidson era (Clayton Mayers produced outside of U.K), or was the notch in fact a later Davidson trademark.   I suspect it's a lot later - unfortunately, although it carries the word Jacobean - there's not Reg. No.   Appreciate any replies, and thanks for looking. :)           P.S.   I did look on the Davidson site, but didn't see this image.

I love coloured Jacobean glass Paul, and am  for your find here, it's super! I have parts of an amber Jacobean trinket set which Marcus found for me a while ago and he tells me that's Inwald production. No idea if the same applies to your tankard or not.

My blue Jacobean jug (also with Jacobean on it) is also considered to be Inwald due the highly polished mirror-like base which Glen tells me is an indicator of Inwald rather than Davidson.

Either Glen herself, or Chris Stewart may be able to add more, of course.

I also just found this advert and thought you might like to see it. It's dated 1929 and is for Jacobean Glassware (sadly not the tankard!)
http://www.gracesguide.co.uk/images/8/85/Im192901GHK-Clayton.jpg and a 1949 one for Jacobean tumblers:

It shows the brand awareness of Jacobean.

thanks Anne - nice to know that I made you green >:D -  and thanks for the links.     So would seem a good possibility that if this is Inwald (i.e. Czechoslovakia, and pre Davidson manufacture) - then the date will be pre 1932. :X:   the base on mine (excluding the star) is also shiny and plished looking.   However, let us wait and see, I may well be very wrong.
Small point of curiosity........I don't see any mould lines around the top inch or so on my tankard  -  the glass is smooth completely.    How do they do it.?

Umm...I had three amber Jacobean tumblers...I used and abused them...in the dishwasher etc...now I have none left.  Are they that scarce?

Edit:  Tell a lie!  I have one left, but it's not looking very happy...

Paul, none of my Inwald Jacobean pieces have any signs of mould marks either. The quality of their finishing is superb.
