Cranberry & Blue Ashtray...Crackle Glass Not Bullicante...
« on: July 24, 2010, 12:32:59 AM »
Bought this sometime ago. It was listed as Seguso but I have my doubts! I bought it because it wasn't the usual bullicante bowls we see but is crackle glass instead. It is slightly larger also than the normal bowls and has a good weight to it. The inside is completely smooth. It is a cranberry colour with a lovely blue outer colour cased in clear. Any thoughts on who it might be?

It is packed away so I cannot give dimensions.

:hi: that is usual, and I Like !!

My guess (?? oh no...) would be either Fratelli Toso or Alfredo Barbini......leaning more towards Barbini ????
I am sure someone with much more knowledge than me will give you a positive ID.

We do know they made some usual colors, and combination like making a blue/brown bowl (here's mine):

I definitely think this a better maker than just generic murano rose. Hopefully santa can find you one as well! This is the first one I have seen in 10+ years of collecting. Hopefully someone else has seen one with a label and it is not the generic label LOL...

Hi there --
No, I think it is very well made by either Fratelli Toso or Alfredo Barbini......leaning more towards Barbini ???

That link I had for the strange color is undecided as Toso or Barbini....and I mean no offense by the word generic as well. I own quite a few and love them!.

I just love yours, and  I think yours IS an Old quality piece

Many of the ashtrays with a colored rim like this were made by Cenedese. I don't know if they did your ashtray, but it is a good company to look at. Hope this helps some.

Thank you tx...i will look into and see what I can find. Have you seen these crackle glass bowls before? This is the only one I have seen but I was out of the game for about 4 years.

Crackled ones found, various examples:
Found a crackled textured bowl listed by Svazzo, but attribution says by Archimede SEGUSO

Found one on Ebay (with price $1200.00):  Click Here

Via google listing, yet on the site I did not see this wording so confused, so here is that Google listing listed:

Alfredo Barbini - Murano Glass Aquarium by Alfredo Barbini for ...
He has been widely recognized as one of Murano's leading figures of the 20th century. Barbini glass is highly known for their thick facade with crackling, ...

????

Just thought I would post for your viewing pleasure.

I haven't seen the bowl before, but the technique is fairly simple and done by several companies. antiquerose showed some examples, though they don't look to be related to your ashtray. I've seen ashtrays with the colored rims like yours attributed to Seguso or Barbini when no label was present. The only labelled ones I've seen have been Cenedese. This doesn't mean anything, because other companies may have had the colored rim.

I consider the crackle just a finishing technique. It would be nice to find an ashtray like yours that has a label. I always hope for the best -- labelled ones have to be out there somewhere.

Hopefully in the next 20years one will pop up with a label, and hopefully not the dreaded 'Generic' Murano label. I have seen the occaisonal circular bowl with this effect but not this square bowl which usually has bullicante in them.

I might search along the lines of Cenedese or Seguso till I come to a dead end.
