Lampwork flower paperweight concave base
« on: August 01, 2010, 11:13:04 AM »
Hi. This has been brightening up a shelf for a wee while but I can't establish who it is by. Felt inspired to ask having spotted some Randall Grubb examples although hae ma doots that this is. There is no signature that I can see. It measures around 2 3/8ins at its widest and 1 3/4ins high. The base is polished and concave. Any help would be appreciated. Many thanks.

Hi there,

What a lovely weight...

I think that it is an old French paperweight produced by Clichy but I may be wrong.

The experts on old weights will correct me if I am.

That is cheering - it is very attractive in its apparent simplicity but the petals on the pink flowers in particular are beautifully detailed. We shall see.
Thanks.

Hi Alastair,

The pink flowers are known as Clichy roses, the trademark of this factory. They are superb.

My only concern is that your roses are paler than the ones I have seen in the past. Clichy was known for its relatively strong colours (by comparison with Baccarat for example).

Oh Sophie - thing is we have got bits of glass dotted all over the house and my wife has this scary philosophy that some pieces really should be turned into pairs of shoes. Just as well she is away this weekend. In some ways I am hoping your doubts about the strength of colour can be confirmed and then I'll be allowed to keep it. Thanks for all your help.

Your wife has very good taste in shoes - I still wear an "old" pair (nothing wrong with them!) that once belonged to her.

Hi Alastair,

Hum!! Think yourself lucky not to be married to me!!! I like BOTH glass and shoes (and clothes of all description...). My husband despair of my 'investments' too... He prefers premium bonds to things hanging in a wardrobe or sitting on a shelf.... ;D

I even have some schizophrenic moments not sure whether I should go for the paperweight on Ebay or the great shoes in Jones (for example). Can be quite hard at times...

My OH believes in good shoes and buys them for me - Riker, Ecco and Hotter - sensible, comfortable, beautiful flat ones. My clothes are all charity shop bought - my money is for glass.

IMHO that's definitely a Clichy weight.  Although John Deacons has done some excellent Clichy-style roses, it is the other cane which persuades me.  That cane, in combination with a Clichy rose, says to me  it's definitely Clichy!  Nice find!   :D
