Ole Winther carafe with molded coat of arms
« on: August 05, 2010, 10:03:03 AM »
Hello All

Please can someone help me identify my carafe?

It is the same size as the small Ole Winter "Viking" carafe but does not have an applied cartouch, instead a coat of arms appears to be moulded into the glass - i have enclosed a picture.

Regards

Peter

It's the (now defunct) emblem for Stowells of Chelsea.

I'm not convinced that these are by Holmegaard - as claimed in the Miller's 20th Century Glass book - because the moulding is significantly different from the Viking and Cherry Elsinore versions, the glass is much thinner and lighter, and the colours I've seen it available in don't match up with any of those used in Holmegaard's palatte for autoblown wares.

I'd be interested to see a photo of the whole carafe at the top of this thread if possible - I have a couple of the HG viking carafes (and glasses) so it'd be interesting to see this one.  As Nic says, the HG ones are very thick and quite distinctively finished.

Pip

Here is the full picture - carafe is very similar to my Viking and Cherry Elsinore carafes.

I have spoken to Constellation Europe Limited who now oen Stowell's and their comments are below.

The brand manager has got back to me who advises that Stowells have never had carafes made by Holmgaard A/S of Denmark.

Sorry this has taken some time to found out.

In view of their comments I wanted to contact Holmegaard to see if the carafe was manufactured by them - but my attempts at a contact there have not yet been fruitful.

Holmegaard went bust in late 2008 - their old factory is owned by Ardagh Glass, an Irish bottle manufacturer, the rights to produce glass under the Holmegaard brand was bought by a Polish company, but I think their archives and historic collections are currently held by Rosendahl - so these might be the best people to contact.

Surely, if that's definitely the Stowells emblem you need to be asking them who made it; they've already said it's not Holmegaard so I can't see what contacting Holmegaard will do - unless you don't think it's the Stowell's emblem

Actually, I'm just wondering if it is Stowell's - I've Googled, but can't find any reference to it. But then, I can't find any reference to any of their 1960s/70s stylings.

I was just going on the Miller's book, which isn't always the wisest thing to do...
