Anyone heard of Luigi Mellara?
« on: December 10, 2005, 06:49:37 PM »
Hi Everyone!
Just wondering if anyone had heard of Luigi Mellara, a glass artist who supposedly worked under Barbini. I have tried to search for him online and only came up with 1 piece by him. I recently bought a pair of Scavo bottles with his signature, and want to know if they are new, or vintage pieces, since they look so similar to the Scavo pieces Barbini was doing in the 70's.
Thanks!
Javier

Hi Javier,
I know virtually nothing about glass and even less about Murano glass, but did find these pieces;

http://www.allardi.com/index.php?srub=catalogue&catalogue=27&mode=tout&archive=1 item 103 and item 104
Sorry that I can't be of more help.
If I know, I'll comment. If I think I know, I'll have a go. If I have no idea, I'll just keep quiet and learn from others, so the next time I'll know.

Hello Della,
Thanks for looking into it. I found the same listings.

Hi Laura,
I do think this might be newer, but not be as new. Maybe 80's? as they are signed Mellara L., and the technique is certinly similar to the Scavo Cenedese and Barbini pieces, cased in black. At least they are signed, and look pretty good. :)

Hi Javier,

I'd agree with '80s. I guess everyone's meaning for "new" is a bit different.  :)

If he is on this site, it suggests that he is currently working.
I met Gary in New York, this summer at the New York Gift Show, and I am sure he would be able to give you more info if you emailed him :D
