I think the pieces in question seem to have heat-finished rims, while the Porshingers appear to have a polished or frilly rim.
Does this help any?

Sue:

I think you're right about the rims. I'm sticking to Gistl for my piece.

Sorry for playing the devilĀ“s advocate, but one could also argue the other way:
The Poschinger vases have a pontil mark, the labelled Gistls have a ground rim...  :thud:

But, Dirk, you play the devil's advocate so well!

My second piece arrived and certainly didn't clear up anything for me. It seems newer, less well made, a cut rim that has been ground, and no hint of a pontil mark. Yet the trailed blue is an exact match for the other piece I have. I don't know anything about Gistl or Poschinger. Does one have a better reputation for the quality of its products than the other? I'm leaning towards accepting that a different company made each of my pieces, or that they were made many years apart and the company changed how they were made. Here are the pictures of the rims and the bases and I'll put the picture of the overall piece in the next post.

The overall picture of the piece. It's 8" tall.

Poschinger is the longest operating glassworks in Germany I think; they started somewhere in the 16th century.
Their output is of high quality; their designs however started to stagnate somewhere after WWII. Nowadays they
produce mass products as well as high quality glass; some of their output are copies of their own art nouveau
pieces.
Gistl was founded somewhere in the 1920Ā“s, if I remember correctly. They mainly produced stemware, decanters etc.
to that time; IĀ“ve only seen vases, which date after WWII so far. DonĀ“t know when exactly they stopped producing
as Gistl.
BTW both glassworks are situated in the city of Frauenau. Gistl was even founded in a formerly Poschinger glassworks.
This might explain the similarity between the designs.
Generally IĀ“d associate the better quality with Poschinger. Concerning the vases in question I can only judge by the
pieces IĀ“ve handled. All labelled Gistl vases of this type IĀ“ve seen had a ground rim. To confuse things further thereĀ“s
also a third type of vase: green trails applied as slings, no pontil mark, fire polished rim. I think weĀ“ll have to decide for
each piece individually and wait for a labelled one of each shape...   :X:

Dirk,

Very helpful. I'm putting down both of mine as German for now.

Just for the record, mine has both a polished pontil mark and what looks like a fire polished rounded rim!
