ice blue bowl - help with inscription - query maker and age
« on: September 02, 2010, 05:24:10 AM »
Hi all
I bought this recently even though it is a little battered, because I was intrigued by its inscription. (it only cost $15 so I can forgive a scratch or two)
It is ice blue - quite thick and heavy, 13.5 cm diameter (or 5 1/4 inches)  and weighs 940grammes (or 34 .4 ounces) The colour is similar to a holmegaard piece of ice blue I have , but this is so much thicker it is hard to be sure.

part of the inscription is obscured by the heavy wear to the edge of the base, but what I think I can make out is;

?? gon s p ?? 46-828

it has not been much loved this piece - what looks like green speckles on the base is in fact paint - which I should be able to get off I hope.
any help with identifying it would be appreciated - it needs a good home and some TLC!
thanks
Jackie  :usd:

Hi Jackie,
I read ´...fors´ rather than ´...gon s´; so perhaps it´s swedish and either Johansfors or Flygsfors.
Can you make out one of these? Sometimes you´re able to read something, when you know what
to look for...  ;)
Cheers,
Dirk

edit: ... or Orrefors, did I forget another one?

I would suggest it is another Orrefors Palmquist design.  I suggest you look back to the strand for John Geller - it is fairly recent - and may be in Scandinavian Glass.  Yours looks somewhat similar and some of the suggestions there may help you.

Sorry Jackie that name is John Peller and it is in the Scandinavian Glass section.  Orrefors sometimes were in the pale blue glass as would Holmegaard & Stronbergshyttan - it seems to be a typical Scandinavian feature.

thanks everyone - I think I have found it  thanks to your suggestions - I googled "sven palmquist bowl" images and there it was!

http://www.thepriceguide.com.au/index.cfm/subcategory/1370-scandinavian/

next to the bottom item on the page.  although as I am not a subscriber I don't get to see the details.

Mods -  with this information is it possible to move this to Scandinavian to see if anyone there can assist with more information and possibly a date please?

Thanks
Jackie

Orrefors says '73 but I think it's earlier since SP already had quit by that time.

True Daniel. but Palmquist was the designer, and they would still mark the object with his initials whilst they continued producing the item.

Thank you Ross and Daniel.

Daniel - when you say "Orreforss says 73" is that from the number on the piece, or the design ?

From the amount of wear to the base I would have thought earlier than that - although I think it has had a hard life! it has certainly not been in  a display cabinet - more likely in someones old shed as an ashtray I think.
thanks
Jackie

What I meant was that it's not common to introduce a new series after that the artist has left the company.

The company owns the design and will continue to produce an item for as long as they want, just like you wrote "ahremck".
