Topic: Modern egg paperweight. Signed P. Whose the maker?!

Evening all

Recently purchased this modern egg 'paperweight' at auction with some other bits.Been scouring books etc to try and find similar designs and maker but to no avail.12.5 cm high and nicely made.Any ideas would be marvellous!

Small glass bits tend to travel huge distances.  However, the position of a base marking does give a clue as to UNLIKELY places of birth.  I suggest you add your location to your personal profile since those from nearer you are more likely to be in the know if it was made near where you live.  The rest of us may be able to help you.  Please send us larger pictures.

Initial way out guess is that the upper part of the P may intend to represent an eel.  In which case i woukld be looking for Peel as the artist name.

Actually looking at your pictures magnified to 400% I now suspect the marks read SP.

I would say that you are looking for S*********** P*********** definitely.  As far as IO know there are no Australian makers who fit the bill - even though the placement and style of the signature is typical.

Thanks Ross.S P now there's a thought; my eyes never saw that! Another avenue to investigate...

I just don't see this as an alphabetic character.  Why would a "P" have three curved legs or feet at its base?  The double curves at the top also have another line extending out from the curve to the edge of the object at about the 1 o'clock position.

I can see it as a stylized image of a gather on the end of a blowpipe passing thru the gloryhole door....but it's a real stretch of imagination and doesn't quite fit the whole of the form either.

Does the "dot" next to the hole in the base, opposite "2002",  look to have been made when it was signed?  Any chance the egg shaped white dot in the center of the three "fingers" at the bottom of the straight line is a smeared signature cane?
