That's beautiful. Fritsche died in 1924 and was still working until then, so that cuts 11 years off.

to be honest - it was a dealer who knew that i collect antique silver claret jugs and he asked if i know an engraver named W. Fritsche - i got a little excited and said yes - a bohemian who worked in england etc etc .. - and in the end i bought it for 250 BP .. i think that is an win - win situation because he bought it for 20 BP . to answer your question : the market is 4 times a year in graz the capital of styria with about 400 exhibitors - 380 have rubbish and 20 are expensive ! and here in austria the dealers are far away from being so informed like the english dealers and collector because the don`t do any teamwork - they are all one-man- shows and in england - i often see that - if a dealer has an unidentified item - within a a few minutes other dealers are around him and everybody is saying what it is or what it could be ! Th best story i heard about this topic was a discussion about an nice antique painted glass goblet - they all looked at it and bespoke every details of the glass till someone said : now i know : The painting is old the glass is new !!

You're right we love to stand around talking about items. It takes me hours to get round my local antiques fair (held over three days) because I have to chat to all the dealers I know. Sharing what you buy greatly increases the fun of the hunt I think that was a very good price for such a nice piece, in a good English auction house I'm sure it would have been more if properly catalogued. i hink, the price was ok - anyway - i will walk my line and i should stay with my claret jugs otherwise i have to build a second storehouse :-)
there is an interesting decanter up for auction in shaftesbury .. anybody near to Semley auctioneers ?
a late C19th Stourbridge Stevens & Williams `rock crystal` engraved glass claret jug with stopper, circa 1885, decorated with exotic birds among flowering shrubs, the engraving probably by John Orchard of a design by Joseph Keller, 13.4ins. (34cms.) high (overall) (see illustration). Footnote - a pair of decanters matching the present claret jug were sold Sotheby`s Olympia, 29th June 2004 (£3,360).
looks very similar to my claret jug !
