Topic: Perthshire, Murano or... someone else?

I have this weight that I purchased while in the UK earlier this year. The design reminds me of Perthshires but the canes and such don't seem as refined as the Perthshire pieces I'm used to seeing. I would think maybe it was a Murano lookalike, except the bottom has a pontil and Murano weights seem to generally be ground and polished flat. Can anyone shed any light on this piece for me? It's 2 3/8" in diameter and about 1 3/4" tall.

Your pretty weight is definitely Scottish.  I would say early Perthshire or perhaps later Strathearn.  Others who really do know will be along in a while.

I'm trying to remember where I bought it. I think I may have picked it up at a big antique mall near Sterling, Scotland.

You have a weight very similar to the one I asked about recently (mine is currently 7th on the list of topics).  The advice I had was that mine is related to PP1 because it is 80mm diameter(3.25") but if it were smaller it would be related to PP2.  I am very definitely not a Scottish paperweight expert but the pattern is virtually identical and it would seem you weight is pre 1978(they included canes after that) and related to what became PP2.

My guess is that it's "related" to Perthshire...  I have a paperweight with similar characteristics that was made by John Deacons after he left Perthshire.  You can definately see the P'shire influence, but it's not quite as crisply exicuted.  Still lovely, though.

I would say Strathearn P7, myself. The weight is not neat enough to be either early Perthshire or John Deacons (the canes do not look John Deacons to me but in truth I am seen few of his early attempts - also there is no signature which is unusual for JD but not impossible).

However, now that I think of it, I have never seen a P7 with a translucent ground (blue or any other translucent colour), Hum...

I am sure someone out there will know for sure....
