glass hand vases/Victorian art glass
« on: September 29, 2004, 06:49:21 AM »
Hi to all glass collectors, this is my first time on the forum!I was wondering if anyone had any info about glass hand vases. They look like a lady's hand holding a cornucopia-type vase.I have 21 in my collection, and I'm trying to research more about them, the manufacturers,in particular,as well as dates. Also if anyone has a hand vase they would like to sell,or swap for another item,I'd be very interested.I'm especially interested in finding pink, vaseline, black, green, red, yellow,or cobalt blue examples. The most common colours seem to be white & turquoise blue milk glass. My collection is all coloured glass, all eras, but mostly Victorian, which is my favourite style.I'm interested in hearing from other fans of Victorian art glass.Favourite pieces for me include fancy baskets, vaseline, opalescent, things with applied flowers, peloton glass,burmese,diamond-quilted satin, fairy lamps...basically anything that screams 1880s!Looking forward to hearing from you!
Marinka.

The mould blown vases with a hand clutching a torch appears in the 1908 and 1914 Portieux & Valérysthal catalogues under the title "main". I believe it is inspired by the statue of liberty (which dates from 1886) but I am not sure if it appears in their 1894 catalogue. I think it was added to the collection "somewhere around that time" and must have remained in production until WW2, perhaps longer. Portieux & Valérysthal being the specialists in opaline colours, the vase is found in every conceivable colour under the sun. With very high probablility the model was also produced by other makers.

Hi,and thanks for your reply,Ivo.I'm trying to research these vases for a possible book,or at least a chapter in a book on art glass, which I hope to get around to writing one day.I've got about 40 books on glass, and a few of them have pictures of handvases, but little info.I recently purchased a large(11 inch) new Fenton handvase from the U.S.A,via Rubylane. It is iridized pearly milk glass,in the black rose pattern-a pink interior, with a black crimped rim.A really stunning item, which fits in well with Victorian pieces.Looking forward to more about these surreal vases, from any other fans or knowledgable folks out there!Best wishes from Marinka.

Hi Jim,thanks for your reply, and yes I have checked out the fairy lamp site,it's great! Really interesting & great photos of beautiful lamps.I have only a few lamps in my collection, but I cherish them.I also have several "orphan" domes & bases, which I live in hope of finding matches for one day.I dream of finding lamps in rainbow satin, burmese, and peloton glass, hopefully at bargain prices! The reference book on fairy lamps is lovely, one of my favourite books. With regard to my original topic,I now have 60 handvases, just to update things!Any other handvase buffs out there?Regards,Marinka.
