J Kilner & Sons Wakefield antique bottle
« on: September 13, 2010, 10:23:42 AM »
I am looking for any information regarding an old bottle. We discovered a cellar in our house in North Yorkshire, built circa 1850.
In the cellar we found a bottle (broken at the next) marked 'The Bilton, Harrogate', and on the back, J. Kilner & Sons Makers Wakefield. Underneath it has the marking 2011, spookily close to current date. I assume its a batch number.
Any information would be very gratefully received. Thanks

Welcome to the GMB.  :hi:

Here is information we already have on this company:
http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,17666.msg102214.html#msg102214

I hope that helps a little...of course, without a photograph we are operating in the dark and information given will be limited due to that.

Adding a photo is easy....here's some step by step instructions:  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,6522.0.html

Different country at the moment so I think this is the correct address for another forum that may help further:

I believe that Jeremy Clarkson, of Top Gear fame, is descended from the Kilner line  :o

Many thanks for the replies.
I have attached a picture that shows the bottle face with 'The Bilton, Harrogate'. The picture of the J. Kinler & Sons, Makers, Wakefield embossing does not come out well.
Again, any info gratefully received.

Back in the UK:

I still think that the Bottle forum will get you an answer much quicker as it is geared to this type of glass. The members are very helpful and I note that 7 posts have been previously made on Kilner jars. The GMB does have a wider remit, and many members do collect the odd bottle (like me), but it is probably inevitable that the knowledge will be somewhat diluted because of this.

In other words, it could take a long time to get an answer!  ;)
