Question about Orrefors
« on: September 19, 2010, 03:24:58 AM »
Hi.  Some years ago I received an orrefors "candy dish" - Its a sort of six looped oblong shaped dish with NU 3100/2 on the bottom.  I think from what I have seen on some posts here that the 3100 may refer to the model and the 2 to the size.  I am not sure what the NU stands for.

I am also curious about what sort of value this object may have.  I am not going to sell it, but am curious as my grandmother liked nice things and I would think that she bought it because she liked it and would have spent a few dollars if she wanted it.

The N stands for Nils Landberg, the U for uncut (smooth) glass.

This table I have had for years you may find it useful in the future:-

ORREFORS CRYSTAL
Unique
Art glass produced in a single, unique piece. Signed by the artist.

EA
(Until 30th June, 1998, stood for Épreuve d'Artiste.) Art glass objects made in very short runs comprising a maximum of five pieces. Signed by the artist.

Gallery
Orrefors Gallery collections are produced in limited runs of between 15 and 60 pieces. Signed by the artists. Several Orrefors artists are normally represented in each Gallery collection.

Studio
A new art glass category introduced on 1st July, 1998. Runs are as for Gallery, i.e. between 15 and 60 pieces, but do not form part of a collection.

Expo
Art glass made in a predetermined run of at least 100 pieces.
The following two tables show the meaning of the lettering in Orrefors numbers:
Initial   Designer   Initial   Designer   Initial   Designer
A   Olle Alberius   H   Edward Hald   P   Sven Palmqvist
B   Gunnar Cyrén   J   Jan Johansson   R   Carl Fagerlund
D   Ingeborg Lundin   K   Henning Koppel   S   John Selbing
F   (Karl) Edvin Öhrström   L   Vicke Lindstrand   T   Lars Hellsten
G   Simon Gate   N   Nils Landberg   V   Eva Englund
(NB: From 1980, two initials have been used, e.g.: NL = Nils Landberg, BB = Gunnar Cyrén)
Glass types
Initial followed by letter A for cut glass
Initial followed by letter E for frosted glass
Initial followed by letter U for uncut, smooth glass
Initial followed by letter Z for green iridescent glass
Initial followed by Graal-S or S-Graal for Slip-Graal

YIkes, I have had quite a time trying to get this photo down to size, and now it may be too small.

Thanks for both your time taken to reply and for the information you provided.  Can you tell me if the 3100 is the model number and is the 2 the size?  Perhaps the 2 represents the number of the piece in the series, say number 2 of so many of model 3100.

Have a look at "http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35700.0.html" where you get Daniel (who is much more expert than I) explaining the numbering system.  Ivo's book is a must - it is great.  Remember that Daniel is German and his English whilst excellent is not colloquial.

HI

This piece is designed 1954.
Several sizes and two colors exists.

The /2 indicates in this case that it is a bowl.

PS. I'm from Sweden. Born and raised 100 m from a glass factory. 15 Kilometres from Orrefors.

Hi:

It was my understanding the letter "u" indicated the piece was hand crafted.

The number two indicates the height of the bowl.

There were three bowls made in this design each with a different diameter.

It appears in the 1954 Orrefors catalog.

Reference:"Swedish Glass Factories - Production Catalogues 1915-1960" Helmut Ricke and Lars Thor.

Bill,

The U indicates that it's made ready in the "glass-blowing-hall". Else it will be engraved, cut, painted or similar in another place in the factory.

/2 will not give you a exact height of the product, it varies from each product.
