Weird striped 'beaky' vase - ID = Dekor Etsning Kosta
« on: September 19, 2010, 03:50:38 PM »
I am trying to id this vase for a friend and ideas would be welcome. The quality feels good, very wide shallow polished pontil mark and it stands almost 11 inches or 27 cm high.

Any help with the title would be appreciated too. Pink cased striped weird beaky vase perhaps? ;D

Thanks.

John

John, are the striped engraved onto the glass or are they stripes within the glass? I can't quite make it out.
Cheers! Anne, da tekniqual wizzerd

The stripes are within the glass - very precise and evenly spaced, if you look towards the base you can see them curling within the clear casing. This is the only photo of the vase that I have, the friend in question is a little technophobic (well a lot really) and as he lives some considerable distance from me the chances of getting any more images for a month or so are minimal.

The shape of the vase is somewhat organic and plant like but my first impression on seeing it was a chick in the nest demanding food from it's parents, hence the beak description.

This is a photo (see attached)I took of Ebay yonks ago for my own education/benefit.

I think it is very like your vase.  I wondered why yours seems familiar.

However, I would expect the vase to have 'Kosta LHxxxx' on the base where xxxx is a number.

Lindstrand was in my mind too when I first saw the stripes but the lack of markings, the colour and the shape make me think it was likely 'inspired by' Lindstrand.

The colour and the way the stripes are suspended in the glass remind me of a pink one I posted a few weeks ago.  It makes me think Czech maybe?

I'm afraid the colouring and substantial-ness had me thinking.... TKMaxx.... Chinese, or perhaps Polish.
Don't wish to rain on anybody's parade, and perhaps my dislike of pink/cranberry really doesn't help my judgement.
(the beakie bits look more like an electric cattle-prod to me.)

Quality is way to good for TK Maxx glass.

I am beginning to lean towards one of the 'smaller' Scandinavian makers. Page 117 Scandinavian Glass Fire and Sea has a handful of Sea Glasbruk vases illustrated, this vase would sit comfortably next to them. Other options according to the book are Glimma Glasbruk, Smalandshyttan, Skruf and Johansfors.

I've had pieces of exceptional quality from TKMaxx, John.  :P
Caithness, Krosno, Tarnowiec, Beranek..... and the Chinese stuff is getting better all the time.
But you've handled it, I'm sure you're right. (but I think it's just horrid.  :-X )
