Pls help identify set of 2 Baccarat sulphide paperweights
« on: October 29, 2010, 05:12:13 AM »
I was hoping someone could help me identify (and possibly date) a set of Baccarat sulphide paperweights, a lion and a lady holding a star.  The lady is stamped with the Baccarat logo but the lion is not.  I have done google image searches and checked ebay and worthpoint and haven't been able to find anything.  Any help would be appreciated.

I would need to see a picture of the lion to make sure since it does not have the logo but it's probably Leo from the Zodiac series. The lady is Virgo from the same series. The series is unlimited but appears with various cutting treatments and I have seen it on opaque light blue as well as cobalt blue.
I collect Scottish and Italian paperweights and anything else that strikes my fancy.

Hi, thanks for the information.  I have attached a picture of the lion.  I finally found a picture of the lady here - http://www.antiquesimagearchive.com/items/377169.html, where she is described as "mythological female."  My knowledge of paperweights is next to zero, but I doubt these are 19th century.  The stamp on the bottom is I think what they call the acid etched mark.

That's Baccarat's Leo.

The zodiac series was made in the 1970s onward. Don't know if or when they stopped making them.

I believe Baccarat had 2 zodiac series .... the later series with a cobalt blue ground and an earlier (1950's?) with a pale blue ground.  Here's a link that shows the later series.  Yours are different though as they have a star-cut base with cobalt around the outer edge of the star.  Maybe there were 3 series.

Baccarat gave their sulphides various cutting styles within their editions so an edition of 2000 would have 3 or 4 facetting styles.

The book I have says they date from the 70s. Rather later than a lot of their other sulphides.

Thanks for the info, that helps a lot.  Glasstrufflehunter, what is the name of the book that you have?

Paperweights of the World by Pommerencke and Fleming, Schiffer publishers. They have a two page spread showing all of the Zodiac series on solid cobalt blue.

Earlier series 'probably' have acid etched mark and later series sandblasted which would help in separating them.
