Orrefors confirmation please.... :-)
« on: November 11, 2010, 09:26:28 PM »
Hello friends,
I think this is Orrefors but no label and I don't know anything about deciphering Orrefors marks.  Can someone confirm for me if it is or not, and if it is possibly an idea of age.   It's Just over 5" (13cm) tall, 4" (10cm) wide.  It's a bit of an oval shape.  The base has a bit of a concave central region.

Similar vases recently on ebay seem to go around $10-15 USD.  Is that fairly common?

Thanks much, -Buck

Yes, it's Orrefors. Designed by Sven Palmqvist is 1944. The engraving on the older pieces is usually better than on the later ones, so this might fetch a bit more that the figure you suggest.

Thank you David.  Can  you make since of the mark on the base for me.  I can't figure out whats a letter and what's a number other than it looks like it ends with '.66.' which I'm not really positive about.  Is it an stock number, is there a date code, etc.   -Buck

Good questions. Believe it or not, the bottom reads, or should read, PU 2944.66  P = Sven Palmqvist, U = handmade glass and 2944 is the Orrefors production number, which runs sequentially for all designers. The production number is assigned at the time the piece is designed and stays the same throughout the period in which the piece is is made.  At first, I read the writing as O = Orrefors  N= Nils Landberg, but a check of the production catalogue showed it to be a Palmqvist piece.

I'm not sure what the "66" signifies here.

Hope this helps.

Thanks David, a great help for sure.  FWIW I ran across this page  http://www.great-glass.co.uk/glass%20notes/swedish.htm which, if I read it correctly, suggest a second letter of 'A' =  cut, polished glass.   This would make sense I think and that second letter looks more like an 'A' than a 'U' to me.  Still no clue on the 66.  It would be great to find something that confirmed that a year was appended to the number at some point.  -Buck

That's correct about the "A."  The code for this piece in the production catalogue is given as "P 2994" (without the A ) based on the form PU 2398. The "A" does make more sense but Orrefors generally didn't use A or U on pieces like this, at least judging by the few pieces I have and the catalogue. The problem is that the writing is often very hard to read and also I'm sure the engravers made the occasional error.
