Hi Deb

Your weight is from Murano the island in the Venice lagoon where all the glassmakers are based.

It is known as a mushroom weight - they also come with a torsade around the stem of the mushroom and as double overlays with facets cut to show the mushroom.

Hope this helps

Derek

Yes, Alan, definitely Fratelli Toso. I have a picture of one of these with a label.

Deb, Murano weights almost always have a flat well-polished base.  (I am assuming that is the case with your mushroom weight.)  While I've seen Murano mushroom weights w/overlay, I do not recall seeing one like yours which had me wondering as well.

Anita, is the photo you mentioned above one you can post here?

Lily :)

Hi Deb

These mushroom weights are actually quite common and probably date to the 1960's - 1970's.

Here are [*] three that are in my collection although I know that there are other varieties - for
instance there is one with a torsade that is a flattened tube. As I mentioned before there are
also mushrooms enclosed in a double overlay.

Best regards

Derek

[*] Mod: Please see below for Derek's pics - which have been reduced from 1200 pixel width to a size that does not need a scroll bar in some people's systems. Thanks Derek.

Derek, could you please provide smaller images of your mushroom weights.

When images are big enough to force a scroll bar, it can sometimes cause a problem with the Board software and also some people have trouble viewing large images. Max size of 700 pixels would be ok. If you reduce the size and add them as another post, I can remove the big ones from your original post.
