Help identifying glass horse ID = Nazeing
« on: December 01, 2010, 11:12:59 AM »
Hello,
Can anyone help me identify my glass horses. They are a pair, nice and heavy, approx 18cm tall from feet to top of ears, are clear glass and very attractive pieces with a saddle and bridle.
Any help greatly appreciated as I cannot find any markings on them.
Thanks
Sarah

I have seen a couple of horses like this that were called Murano glass, but did not have labels. I saw another very similar horse that was part of a sculpture that had a label saying it was from Belgium. Beyond those two tidbits of information, I can't be much help with these horses.

Hello Sarah, and welcome to te board,

These horses are were made at Nazeing Glass Works. They come with coloured bodies as well. See Timberlake 75 Years of Diverse Glass-making to the World; A celebration of Nazeing Glass Works 1928-2003, under 'Friggers'

Nigel, I'm not Sarah but wanted to say thank you for putting a definite ID on these horses. The ones I've seen were attributed to Seguso, but it did not look like their work to me. I would have never thought of Nazeing.

Yes Anita, I've seen all sorts of attributions, including Seguso, but they were made by Albert Beugnies (spelling according to a Portugese Glass Exhibition catalogue of 1972). Although it does occur to me that they may have been made in the tradition of his glass roots - Belgium - and therefore may have been made by others.

Am I correct in thinking that the book referred to was printed privately  -  I have looked before and not seen a copy.    Does anyone know if it's available for sale anywhere??.  I have tried Abe Books without success. :)

Paul,

Yes, it was privately published by the author, and was a short run; therefore not widely available and no longer easy to find.

You really should try and get to a glass fair or two........then you'd find a copy sitting on my stand for sale - amongst many other wonderful things throughout the fair!! ;)

If you'd like to email me, I'll let you have some details  :)

thank you for the reply Nigel - I will send you an 'off-board' email later today  -  as I have just come back from the charity shops (who were open briefly this morning) and I bought something which I want to show on the GMB. :)
