1887 Signed SCHNEIDER Glass Paperweight .... hmmm
« on: December 11, 2010, 10:24:54 PM »
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=170577632415

When I informed the seller that this was a second half 20th century Murano weight with a creative date cane and a fake Schneider signature, his only reaction was "thank you" - but no change in the listing :-(.

What do you think this is?

Reminds me of those fake 1848 Baccarat paperweights - perhaps someone has a small business going.  Personally I would suspect our :or: friends of creating a French Murano "masterpiece".

Hah! I now know what was irritating me.  The only Schneider glass I have ever seen has been scratch marked - including my candelabra.  I thought etched marks did not come in until sometime in the 1920s or 1930s.  I wonder if anyone knows when they did come in?

If my sense of when etched marks started is correct then that date is ridiculous.

the item predates the firm's foundation by 24 years.  :thud:

... which I had mailed the seller as well - seems, he wasn't impressed: he might change his mind if he gets similar info from other people.

Reporting to ebay will have no effect whatsoever :'(. They will only respond that the issue will be investigated - but the result cannot be reported back due to their protection measures. As long as the seller pays the ebay fees, they just don't care - unless a powerful company is involved which might sue them.

I suspect the seller feels they are in the clear.  The listing only says "signed Schneider".  Not that it actually is.

We recently bought this paperweight. It is signed - Schneider France - and has quite a lot of wear to the base and also a ground pontil.  We enclose pictures.

It is 80 mm diameter

Has anybody any information on this paperweight please.

Thanks John

Terry and Peggy

P.S. Thanks to Patrick for the help with the close up picture of the signature.

Hi Terry,
Have a read here ( a long read but contains many facts )........................   near the end there is mention of clear weights with bubbles , made circa 1960 and signed with Schnieder, FRANCE.

THese two just closed on ebay  220706505261 and 220706504150 both described as Schneider. I have one almost identical to 220706505261 and it has a signature on it.  When I got it I did some research and was reasonably satisfied that it was a Schneider.
