Unsigned vase- - ID = WMF Ikora
« on: December 16, 2010, 05:30:45 AM »
This unsigned vase is one of my favorites, but I am clueless as to its maker.  It just doesn't look like anything I've seen here in the States, and most studio glass in the U.S. has an engraved signature.  This vase has a polished pontil with no signature and three applied feet with glass inclusions that make them look like little paperweights.  It is quite thick, with an outer layer of clear glass.  There are tons of bubbles in the upper layer of glass, and scattered bubbles within the body of the vase.

I have seen nothing quite like this, but the internal combinations of glass and enamels and bubbles reminds me of the few pieces of British Isles glass I have been privileged to see.  Does this look familiar to anyone?  Thanks!

Those colours look very "Mdina" to me especially around the base of the vase.  If it were Australian it would almost certainly be signed on the base and I am surprised it is not - even if it is Mdina.

Not Mdina. I would look at Ivo's suggestion

I would agree that your vase is not from Mdina, very interesting it is too. As Ivo suggested WMF and Ikora would be a strong possibility, less likely would be Daum, they did make some stunning and incredibly 'modern' looking glass in the twenties and thirties using similar techniques.

Ivo, you are brilliant.  I have one of the giant Ikora bowls with the crazed/crackeled aluminium nitrate network, and since this looked so different, it never occurred to me to think of Ikora.  But I pulled out the WMF Ikora & Myra glass book, and not only is the internal decoration consistent with some of the earliest examples in the book, but the 1928 rep's catalog for specialist retailers in 1928 shows a number 67/1887 that is the same shape with three ball feet.  It is not a vase after all, but a blumentopf (flower pot).  The shape is not shown in the 1930/31 catalogs or later catalogs, so perhaps this was made for only a short period of time.

Thank you, Ivo and all of you who looked at it!  I am so happy to know what it is!   ;D
