Just got this one in, it's very pretty! In contrast with the more freeflowing pieces I've seen labeled and described as Czech, this one looks really geometrical. It's circular, as wide at the top as at the bottom (though some pictures taken from above suggest otherwise). It has four large flat oval lenses on the sides, equally spaced. The rim and base are flat. Couldn't find anything similar online so far, or in Mark Hill's book (though the oval lenses seem to come back in several designs). It's fairly heavy for its size.

Measurements are 9 cm high, 11 cm wide. 7.5 cm wide at the base and 6.5 cm wide at the rim (with the opening being 4 cm wide).

On the photographs it looks quite pink, but sometimes it looks more blueish depending on what light is on it. I'm to inexperienced to tell whether that means there is a special ingredient involved. Tried the UV light on it, but it didn't light up or anything like that.

The label is the (general?) Bohemia Glass, made in Czechoslovakia, but in a black background with gold lettering (unfortunately that particular combination was not mentioned in Mark Hill's book, nor on the czech label collection online).

I'm sure experienced sklo and/or czech glass lovers on this forum can tell me more about the factory, the designer and/or the time period the label would indicate.

Hi Astrid,
your glass vase contains a so called rare earth as colorant, which makes it neodymium glass.
Here´s an explanation, but I´m sure the search option of this board will bring up quite some
more topics:
http://www.mindspring.com/~reyne/neowhatsis.html
As to the maker I´m undecided. ZBS are one of the major makers of neodymium glass in
Czech Republic, but I don´t know, whether they used the Bohemia label. They usually have
their own label:

We´re possibly looking for another maker, hopefully one of the czech specialist will drop in.

Dirk

Dirk,

Thanks so much, I'm glad you're able to tell about the glass type from the description and the photo. I had read about neodymium glass, but I wasn't sure this vase was one of them.

It looks like ZBS vase to me.
The label is standard Glassexport one, used for the most Czech product for export.

Thanks very much, Jindrich, I'll keep looking for more info on Zelezy Brod vases. The designer mostly attached to the Zelezny brod pieces in Mark Hill's book is Miloslav Klinger, but I don't know how many others did design for this company. Are there any other names I could or should search for?

And the other question I have is aproximately from when to when the black and gold label was used? I guess not after 1993, as czechoslovakia ceased to exist at that date, but is it easier to pin down than that?

Hi Astrid,
in ZBS had worked several glass designers, but in free hand shaped designs was dominant Miloslav Klinger.
The most known engraver was Jindrich Tockstein, Eva Svestkova,  glass cut designs had been made by Alois Metelák, Antonin Drobnik, Bretislav Novák. In between famous names of ZBS we can find also  Miloslav Janků. Milso Hlavac and Vilem Dostrasil (glass figures), Jan Cerny (glass statues) and many others.

I am just beginner in ZBS glass, there is still plenty to discover.

I think I found this vase in glassrevue 1968/8, page 16 in Jindrich's scans in the left corner (I think it's page 278 from the Glassrevue). If correct, this vase is not ZBS but Jablonecky Sklarny, and I'm dying to know if the text gives any more info on the designer of the vase (the scans are sadly a bit too small to read the text).

Jindrich, could you perhaps have a look for me?

Ah, apparantly I should have used the magnifying glass that was included with the scans. Very sorry to bother everyone unnecessarily.

But anyway, I checked the dimensions, and it works.

According to Glassrevue 1968/8 it is a pressed glass vase designed by Vaclav Hanus for Jablonecky Sklarny, 1968, pattern number 25562/9,5.
