Caithness Object D'Art Paperweight
« on: January 19, 2011, 04:33:27 AM »
Saw a Caithness weight in a shop a few weeks ago.  As I recollect, it was basically green and egg-shaped with two holes on opposite sides  which were too small to be for pens.  At first I thought maybe they were for incense sticks but the holes went straight in, not with a downward slant, which didn't seem particularly safe for burning something.  The holes did not connect.  There may have been some controlled bubbles surrounding the holes.

On the bottom was etched  Caithness   Object D'Art   Scotland

On the outer edge of the base was the letter "y" with three numbers I cannot recall.

I have no photo and didn't find the weight particularly attractive, but was curious about it after I got home.

Anybody have any information?

Lily

See HERE for more info.

The Y means it was actually made in 2001 - and the three-digit number indicates very(!!) early that year, like beginning of Jan.

Your book is ok on this aspect: the design was first issued in 2000 - but the actual weight (marked Y) was made in 2001.

I guess it might be worth adding some detail of the holes to that description as it is not obvious in the pictures!

Gentlemen, thank you both for your information.  I'll be in the area again next month and will try to get to the shop.  It was tucked away in an upstairs booth so it should most likely still be there.  I'll write the numbers down and post them here.

All the best .... Lily  :)

Hi all
I picked this weight up today and whilst researching found this thread, so helpful, now i have all the info in the first hit  :smg:.
Caithness object d'art w29881, what year does that make mine?
Scotlands glass team, I am happy for you to use my photo's if they would help.
I would assume the holes are just for optical effect being that the name is object d'art, they have no need for purpose.
Ive taken a few pictures from different angle so you can see the controlled bubble surrounding the holes on either side.
all the best

Thank you very much (again!) for your permission to use your images on ScotlandsGlass.

W stands for 2000 (year of issue)
X was not used
Y stands for 2001 (as mentioned above)
