Whitefriars or Caithness 1980 Garland with Rose Center
« on: January 29, 2011, 03:38:27 PM »
I have a garland paperweight with molded sides.  The label says Whitefriars but it is an oval label not the usual rectangular label that we find on earlier Whitefriars weights.  It has the Whitefriars 1980 signature cane.  I originally thought that it was made under the Caithness ownership, but the Charlton Catalog says that Caithness production didn't start until 1981.  I noticed a similar design in the 1981 Caithness Garland CT245.

So, is this really a late model Whitefriars (one of the last designs) or an early Caithness?  And what is a fair price for it?

That label is spot on for a late W/Fs weight . well done  jp
Also i believe its made on a button base Caithness are not , just a flat base .
PS  That is a rather special weight you may get a fair wack for it .

Thanks John.  Yes it is done on a button base like the earlier Whitefriars weights.  The translucent ground and the label made me wonder so I appreciate your judgment.

Nice!  That label is not recorded in the photo site Angela Bowey set up in parellel with this site.  I use http://www.glassphotographs.com/ to reach it.  It has a great list of labels and signatures and it would be good if you would add the label photo to the "English labels" section.

Thanks for telling me about this site.  I will add the label once my registration is approved.

Also, I have the wrong picture posted above for the side view, so I am correcting it here.

Hello

John is right about the clichy style rose cane. Also, the yellow flowers are daffodils which are rare. They are listed in the whitefriars literature as 'special daffodil canes'. I have only seen them once before and that was in a miniature weight. What size is your weight.

Well done on an excellent acquisition.

Thanks,

Richard

Hi Allan

The Whitefriars Paperweights Collectors Guide (by Brian Slingsby and Judy Taylor) shows a good selection of trial pieces, and I recall Brian Slingsby - who was Techical Director at Whitefriars - saying during a talk to the PCC that there were usually a variety of trial pieces produced each year, from which the next year's production designs were chosen.  Perhaps this is such a trial piece.
