Tapio Wirkkala acid stamp

(1/1)

glasswizard:
I found a piece of iittala, one of my favorite companies.
It measures only 4 inches high. My surprise came when I turned it over.

My question is when did they use an acid stamp for signatures and when would this piece have been made. Thanks Terry.

robbo:
Hi Glasswizard,
This design is called Ovalis, apparantly originally designed 1958. There are several different sizes see here.

I think this style of mark indicates a fairly recent production. The current issues of the Aalto 'Savoy' vase have a similar mark and the Ovalis design is still listed on the Iittala website. There may be more information about dating the mark in the Designlasin book that Max and Adam have.

Frank:
I doubt it is an acid mark, stencil and sand blast. Same as Stuart Crystal used,
