Fish candlestick
« on: February 20, 2011, 10:46:29 PM »
I suspect this example is fairly modern and probably a bit generic compared to the few I have found via google. Still, any information regarding the age or possible maker of the stick would be appreciated.

There is a surprising amount of work in the little beast, decorated with gold foil (I think) and there is a snapped off pontil mark on the base. A little over 13cm tall (5 inches).

Thanks.
John

Looks like Archimede Seguso to me. Don't know who else made this form?

I have a table lamp in this style and they are fairly common. The candlesticks are also around but you don't see them quite so often, at least in OZ. 1960's most probably but they were popular and made for a fair while.

Thanks Ardy, this is one of a few I did bump into, it seemed a little subtler to me: http://www.worthpoint.com/worthopedia/old-unusual-venetian-murano-fish-or-dolphin

Hi John - haven't seen that form in AS and suspect it is not by him. Pretty sure yours is AS.

John and Ardy- I have similar looking candle sticks , a little taller and clear with gold flecks- I would suggest a more general "Made in Murano" even though I would be stoked to think my items have a named maker. Cannot give precise details as to height as they are in storage, but no cracks or missing bits, just a little base wear.

Hi Carol will be interesting to see what the North Americans have to say when they wake up as they have more Murano than the rest of the world put together - at least it seems that way.

Have not seen an attribution to this style other than AS but as with most things Murano anything half successful was copied.

I also wonder about the dolphins used in Murano and whether there was a group that specialised in making them and sold them to others as construction bits. On the other hand maybe there was a group within the makers that did this.

Seems hard to imagine that AS would make each dolphin separately for an item that was basically a tourist or retail sale.

I see what you mean Ardy, very interesting your lampbase - how tall is it? Carol, I think our fishies were made at the same place, the way the tails curve around and are tooled looks spot on. I am more comfortable with Murano as an attribution than a specific maker at present.

Thanks both.

Your candlestick is lovely, John. It is  well detailed. From the sketchy bit I've picked up about them. They were made by Salviati and Barovier early, then copied by many people later. I had a few like yours, but only with prunts. I sold them as Salviati back in my earlier years. Then I noticed many that were similar that weren't by Salviati. To be on the safe side, I just started calling things like this "Venetian glass." Works okay in stores, but not so good on eBay, where people like definite attributions. Experts can probably be sure of the differences, but the best I could do was to judge good ones from bad ones. Yours is a good one.

ICET has also started to make the dolphin pieces, but they are clumsy looking, so easy to spot.
