Quiz: Oh no! That's not Murano!
« on: March 05, 2011, 10:22:55 AM »
Every month I change the display on my front window-sill. The theme for this month is 'Oh no! That's not Murano'. Every one of these vases/bowls was sold in the past year under the Murano description - absolutely none of them are Murano in any way (shame on you if you sold me one of these for not identifying it properly :) )

Some were posted on this forum, one even very recently. The piece on the far left in the second picture is of course not glass, it's a carved springstone statue from Zimbabwe :)

So, the quiz: can you identify these 10 pieces without peeking (at my Picasa website for instance, where all of them are identified correctly)?

I'll credit my husband for coming up with the name of this quiz. A few months ago, hearing me exclaim "Aaargh. How can they sell this as Murano??", he made the following motto song for me (based on 'Godzilla' by the Blue Oyster Cult).

"Oh no! They say it's got to go
Go go Glassilla!
Oh no! That's not Murano!
Go go Glassilla!"

 :girlcheer:

He sings it now and again when he finds me muttering behind an ebay screen at my computer...

I see you´ve grouped them by ______   (5+5) ;D
Hope I don´t spoil the fun with this little hint?

Actually the one you refer to is the only one where the attribution on this forum was not watertightly proven according to some. I accepted the solution offered, however.

And I would have been quite surprised if you hadn't been able to name most or all of these, Dirk :)

may I have a bit of a stab - not actually naming them all, I could never pretend to ever reach Dirk's standard - but suggesting that the second row are all Czechoslovakian blown and moulded  -  and I know that the central green vase in the top row is WMF, so are the others from the same stable??   I really like the phallic looking pink thingy on the right, and know I have seen it recently, but can't remember where.     Great pieces Astrid, no matter from where they come ;)

I did cheat Astrid * :pb: but only bcause I don't collect vases......at least I don't intentionally collect them!  What a wonderful collection!!
I really like your idea of changing the collection on view,  do you mind if I pinch that idea?  I do change them from time to time,  but not with any particular theme in mind....brilliant!

*I won't tell what I found out by the way.

By all means Rosie, go ahead. I think themed displaying is great if you tend to buy a lot, have a large collection and not enough space to display it properly all the time.

Let's see, for inspiration, I've had the following themes lately:

October: Autumn (Brown, orange and a bit of red and yellow coloured vases)
November: Czech pressed glass display
December: Winter colours (Clear, black and white glass)
January: Bubbles! (all vases with air bubbles as part of the design)
February: Big is Beautiful (6 very big and bold vases)

Maybe we can have a thread for different themed displays to inspire others

Yes, the five on the left of the bottom picture are Czech, but the red one on the right isn't.

You've seen it in Glass, because I just got confirmed in this forum it is what I hoped it was. The thread is still fresh :)
I'll give a hint: all the vases in the top picture are from the same country, but not all from the same factory (two of them are).

I know what is what, but only because I take a look at your wonderful albums very regularly...   :)

(I do wish more people would make their albums available for viewing.  Sigh.)

did you photograph them?

Ehhh... I started that with the november display and did december, and then forgot to take pictures of january and february. Wait, I'll make a different thread right now and show the ones I have made. At least it can inspire people to add a picture of their current display, themed or not. Having separate pictures of glass pieces in an online album is one thing, but there is also fun to be had in finding a way of combining them and showing the combination.

Here is the new thread: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,39041.0.html
