My first Carnival pieces+ a jet compote

These are my first pieces of Carnival glass, two acquired this morning.

The first is a lovely amethyst Fenton compote - I think called "wreath of roses" but apart from that know nothing else about it.

The second, is a shallow ruffled dish with 'diamond' and 'star' decoration.

Of the three, I think I like the Fenton best of all.  

Last of all, and I'm not sure what to call this - 'jet' ?  A diamond hobnail compote which I haven't seen before.

Hi Anne,

I love the Fenton comport but am still not convinced with the orange, still a bit flashy and ....... :shock:

The black one is it really black or might it be a very deep purple?

The black or jet compote is so thick that a strong light won't penetrate through it to show whether it is purple, unlike a Webb jug that I have, that shows a beautiful rich purple colour when tested.  

I agree with you about the orange :shock: , but they were only a pound each and I bought them more as a learning venture :roll:  Its nice to actually compare and handle pieces. Something I've not been able to do until now.

I haven't been able to buy an orange piece yet, I am working up to it by buying smaller pieces in different colours, and hopefully one day I may be strong enough to be able to buy one :wink:  Glen is helping me with my phobia, and I am becoming better :lol:

The black one is similar to some I have seen but in milk white glass, which I think may have come from the US, but I'm not 100% sure. Could be Fenton again?

Anne - what excellent purchases.

You are right that the stemmed comport is Fenton's Wreath of Roses.

The second one is a great find. It's a Brockwitz bowl. The pattern is not very well known, and is sometimes referred to as Sunspray. It can also be found as part of a 3-piece epergne, with a metal base and an epergne flower holder (horn) at the top.

The ruffled edge is unusual for Brockwitz, as is the slightly thinner glass. Mostly Brockwitz Carnival is sturdier and almost always "as moulded" with no hand finishing / shaping. The Sunspray, and another slightly similar pattern (Sungold Floral), are however, known in this ruffled form.

The third item is closer to home. It's a Sowerby "Pineapple" (Sowerby's 2349) sugar.

The black piece looks familiar but I haven't been able to find a match.  It is hard to see the pattern.

Are the diamond points smooth like Indiana Diamond Point or do they have a little cross hatch on the point like Westmoreland English Hobnail?

Glen - I'm thrilled!  A Brockwitz piece!  There is a small chip on the edge which I have only just noticed, but its difficult to spot because of the ruffled edge, fortunately.    And - a Sowerby too!   These two pieces look very similar in colour and in fact I can't detect any difference.  The black piece isn't carnival (said very tentatively :roll: )

Connie - the diamond points are smooth.  They are not like the ones you show.  I've taken a closeup showing what I would call square pyramids.  This patterning has been done in four sections around the bowl.  Each section is like a section of pineapple.  The interior is smooth.
