Pulegoso vase, not Beranek, who?
« on: March 26, 2011, 05:11:00 PM »
Hi

I´m a bit undecided with this one. While the colour is consistent with other Beranek pieces
I own, the base treatment is different. It´s indented and has a sharp pontil scar - not very
sharp though. The almost clear amber and not so pulegoso fluted rim isn´t something I´ve
knowingly come across either...
Anyone got an idea?

~15cm tall and ~13cm wide

TIA
Dirk

A nice piece. I cannot comment confidently on the specific origin of this piece, "pulegoso" style-"schaumglas" etc.. as I am finding, can be a very tricky thing to attribute, without a direct Beranek pattern match, with an unusual feature like an amber rim, unpolished pontil rod mark.. ... can make it difficult for attribution ...... and so ....... I have to side with Jindra ,,,, who has the same view I think...

Not that my opinion has the weight of either bOBA or Jindrich's, but I don't think it's Czech either. I believe they were made by the same maker who made these:

...which I don't think is Italian either. It's quite easy to find them (or at least extremely similar items) here in Sweden, and usually the quality is pretty poor even though your vase looks decent.

Best Regards
Emil

Many thanks for your replies - much appreciated! Seems we´re back to the drawing board then...
I was hoping there were some known Beranek pieces with an unfinished pontil mark or amber
out there, but of course I fully rely on your opinion.  :)

The colour is a bit more blue-ish than it possibly appears in the pictures. Although it has a little
inclusion on one side the vase looks solid quality to me.
BTW is it a general feature of pulegoso pieces, that the inner surface is smoother than the outer?
I have seen this effect, though not as pronounced as on this vase, on my Beranek pieces, too.

The piece you refer to here is from Egypt (or Morocco) and is indeed of pretty dire quality These pieces have been taken back as souvenirs by many people, and so they are not rare - in sweden or elsewhere. The original question refers to a Pulegoso piece with an added rim, and is not of the same production - and I agree it cannot be attributed now.  Identifying Pulegoso pieces is really tricky, as the technique is easy ("just add diesel to the batch") and most glass makers have tried it at some time, with varying rates of success. One indicator is the balance and finish of the piece. If it topples over, or if it has a really rough pontil, stop looking for a quality maker....

Thanks again! I see my chances fading rapidly... Well, I´ll file it under unknown pieces meanwhile, but - you never know...  :)
