Confusing Sommerso question
« on: February 05, 2006, 05:54:11 PM »
I don't think there's a difference between "Sommerso" and "double Sommerso".

If I have a Murano piece with a layer of green glass and a layer of clear glass, would it be confusing to a buyer if I called it a double Sommerso?

Thanks.  :)

Normally single, double, treble etc refers to the coloured layers and the clear is not counted.

Thanks, i've changed my listing to "Sommerso". Phew.  :D

I'm pleased that I asked this question as I don't like to wrongly describe items.

I can relax now. Cheers. 8)

Is Sommerso a casing technique that can be applied to glass made anywhere or one that just applies to Murano glass. I have an ashtray, which is labelled LSA International and probably made in Poland. I described it as a geode-style ashtray on ebay but have had it removed because "geode-style" is keyword spamming, apparently!

See here for a picture http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,3906.msg30460.html#msg30460

I used geode-style purely because that was what I thought it looked like, i.e., a geode cut in half, and I've seen that description applied to glass dishes.

Can I call it Sommerso?

I suspect that I may have been reported by a 'customer' (and I use the word loosely) who bid on something I'd described as a jade green GLASS ashtray, pushed the price up, won it, paid UK postage to the US and then read the description and found out that it wasn't jade. She got really nasty when I defended my use of words and tried to explain that UK postage wasn't enough for the US. She also declined my offers to cancel the sale but her final parting email (after she paid) left me shaking

I haven't left feedback - yet!

Can you call it Sommerso technique?  Yes you can, because it's coloured glass submerged within a clear glass wrapper.  Can I recommend Ivo's book, the Glass Fact File, Millers?  It's invaluable.  :D

I can hardly believe that you had your auction pulled due to it being 'geode style'.  I can't see what's wrong with that.  It's hardly keyword spamming.  Ebay is mad sometimes!

Sorry about your green GLASS jade item too...you must have encountered an Ebay nutter!

Yes, I feel quite angry with the whole mad world today!

Thanks Max.  :) I've just got the book (in fact a pile of them on glass) but I haven't had time read any of them yet. I got more for the green ashtray than I expected, so that was good, it's just that you don't need the nastiness. I suspect she collects "mineral" ashtrays and my latest listing popped up on her search
