Tapio Wirkkala lamp base?
« on: June 26, 2011, 03:43:27 PM »
Found this lamp today on my fleamarket tour; as I discovered an engraved "TW" at the bottom and it cost 2,- Euro I bought it.

Looking in my Iittala book I found out that this design was originally a bottle (PN 2507), produced 1959-1966.

Do you think the brass fitting (which fits perfectly :)) is original and the lamp was distributed by Iittala? Or has somebody later converted the bottle to a lamp?
The shade that came with it looked 1960s style as well...

Thanks!
Michael

This doesn't answer all my questions, but at least it is quite obvious now that the green one isn't a unique piece...

The fitting on your green lamp does look purpose made from your photos....

Thanks, John. I would think the same...
The fittings are identical on both lamps btw -- the reflection of the red shade makes it look different.

So I guess some Austrian retailer in the 1960s converted these into lamps? (Considering that they only seem to pop up here)

That does seem like a reasonable working assumption Michael, especially if they are not found elsewhere.
