Green Uranium footed bowl ID = Davidson 718
« on: June 26, 2011, 08:46:42 AM »
When I bought this I didn't think by looking at it that it was Uranium glass, though I am very often surprised one way or another. It has a definate glow under the UV light but it's a muted and rather yellow glow, could it be Cadmium? Also any ideas on its origin would be appreciated. I have trawled the "search" facility but have given up. The diameter is nine inches. Many thanks in advance.

Cadmium gives a distinct yellowy orange glow without a hint of green. The glow from this bowl is probably caused by the use of manganese, which was used as a decoloriser, but don't ask me why it's found in coloured glass.

Your bowl is a Davidson 503 bowl. This bowl was introduced in 1956 but the pattern on it dates from 1898 (Stewart and Stewart). It is not found in uranium glass.

Thank you, Manganese, I have learned something today, that's really good.

More examples in different colours in this thread, seems to be some confusion over the pattern number though: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,27827.0.html

718 is the 1898 pattern, which was reused in the flat rim 504 shape in 1956.

There has been a request to update the titke of this thread with a "504" ID for this bowl, and also for items in the message that John linked to above. However, in the linked to message, there is another linked message which refers to "718".

Can we please confirm things.
Is the bowl in this thread definitely a "504"?
And are the items in the messages linked to not "718" but also "504"?

Hi,

It is a Davidson 718 bowl. This bowl was introduced around 1935. The pattern on the bowl is the davidson 1890 pattern.

I've got my numbers in a twiddle. Isn't this bowl part of the 503 fruit set that was based on the 718 aka 1898 pattern, at least that's the way I read your book p 60
