Ormolu Set of Four Bottles
« on: July 22, 2011, 05:48:25 AM »
Sorry for the photos, but too much bling for good pics. Dealer I know steered me to an estate that was having a private sale although not much glass. Grandkids were having the sale & grandkids were in their 60's like me. All they know that this was from a great uncle who was in the shipbuilding business & brought this back from europe in 1906 to give to his wife & they like me didn't have any idea of what it was for & it had set in various cabinets in various homes passed down & never used for anything. Four bottles 11 1/2" height with 3" triangular edge on each bottle. Ormolu is brass & covers everything, cherubs, etc. Bottles are frozen in place inside the Ormolu, set weighs in at 8 lbs. bottles from what I can see are think glass, bottoms look polished, cut stoppers, its a bit overboard. Now I have seen smaller sets of three bottles where the bottles were maybe 4" high & these were supposedly vanity bottles, but I cannot see four 11 1/2" heavy bottles being used as any type of vanity item & its a bit impractical for any type of decanter set. I used alcohol to remove a think coat of dust on the outside & inside even though the stoppers were in place. So my questions are....what was the purpose of this piece & what is the opinion on country of origin? Thanks, Ken

Frank I really appreciate the bath oil ID & I never would have guessed that in a million years. With your help I was able to locate sets such as this one. Thanks, Ken

Oh wow Ken, that is blingy! I like it a lot.

I've seen similar sets by Bruder Rachmann in the Sudetenland (now part of Czech Republic.) Might be an area to explore... Frank posted a bit about them in this topic too: http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,28028.0.html
