Unusually large Tortoiseshell vase. ID = Mdina
« on: July 29, 2011, 09:18:30 PM »
I wonder if anyone can confirm this item I have just bought as an Isle of Wight tortoise shell/log vase. The vase is just under 10" high and I have only ever seen 7 and 8 inch high versions of this type. It looks like an IOW peice.

Thanks
Keith

Hi Keith,

Looks like a Mdina textured bark vase and would date from sometime after 1972. Not sure about the sizes differences...

Hope this helps a little.

Thanks for that information Greg. I had always (mistakenly it seems) thought that Mdina produced mainy blue vases while IOW produced the brown tortoise shell types. I've still got a lot to learn!

Hi Keith,

Produced in blue-green and your tortoiseshell colour. I presume the base is completely flat and polished ?

Yes it is Greg. Looks like you've nailed it. I'm always impressed at the level of expertise on this site - still surprised at the height though.

Many thanks.

This is Mdina "Tortoiseshell" - and an unusually large piece. I have two this size in blues with the yellow silver chloride effects on them. I believe they are post-Harris, but not too long after.
Isle of Wight Studio Glass "Tortoiseshell" is a spiral pattern of streaky browns on a bubbly yellow background - developed from Michael Harris' Mdina "Earthtones" design.

Thanks for that Sue. Very useful information. I think I'll look out for those Mdina vases you describe. Any chance of a photo of them please?

Thanks Again
Keith
