Caithness Bouquet ID help
« on: August 02, 2011, 11:31:48 AM »

I have an attractive Caithness bouquet design, on a mottled toffee ground.  The base is marked (badly) with CIIG. Diameter 3 inch / 78 mm, height 2 5/8 inch / 70 mm.  I cannot spot it in the catalogue, which suggests one of three options:

1. Due to incompetence, I have missed the design in the catalogue, and it is a second for some reason (most likely option... :ha:)
2. It was a trial design, not chosen, then sold as a second through the shop.
3. Err...some other explanation....

Any thoughts?

Alan

I reckon the reason it is a second is that the bow is slightly mispositioned.  Should be a little higher and to the right I feel.
[see CT592 & CT475 for similar bows]

I can't see it either so perhaps it was a sample gone wrong.

      Second option seems most likely.

Hi,
This was not a Caithness production piece; looking at the flowers I would say it was from the 1983/4 era. This was the period that we were training other glassmakers to do lampwork; as the demand was outstripping the ability we had to produce them. We only really had Harry McKay who was used to making that type of weight, so I remember setting up simple lampwork designs made up from left over flowers from the lampwork boxes so that other glassmakers could practise without wasting actual designs. I obviously do not remember the designs, but if I was to guess then I would say this was one of those weights as they automatically just were sent through to the seconds shop to sell. Hope this is of some use even though it doesn't exactly identify this actual weight.

Hi Allan

That explanation makes a lot of sense - many thanks.
