Hi folks,

I am looking for a bit of help on this pwt. It has really struck my curiosity - it has a queer bubble design. And is signed at the bottom by the looks "M.R". Perhaps, somebody knows more about it.

Thankyou,
Jack

[Mod: Original comment transferred from another thread ...]This weight is of a type I know very little about. It seems to be a "three-trumpet-flower" item, which is a design made in both Europe and the USA, and also India.

Having seen the revised pics, this weight is rather different from what I first thought. It is not a "Trumpet Flower" type in the sense I was thinking of.

[Mod: Comment by Ross moved over from another thread ...]

When you have signatures that are hard to read there are a number of ways that may improve clarity.

See the following for some methods that helped Jean  http://www.glassmessages.com/index.php/topic,35231.0.html

After looking carefully at you photo I am suspicious that it may not be just MR.  In my experience most pwts marked like this have a pair of initials plus a 2 digit date.  For example ME 87 might mean Maurice Egerton made 1987 if you have a way of converting the initials.  Sometimes youo get 2 people with the same initial - JS = Sulio Santos for instance but it may mean John Schunmann.  Fortunately thought they both used impressed marks on occasion they use a different font.

Please try and get a sharp picture of just the signature so that the interior of the pwt does not show (and thus distract).  Use the "tulip" setting on your camera for close up but be certain to get as sharp a focus as possible so we can blow it up and get good detail.

Ross

By the way I have two possible MR's on my list of Australian Glass people.  Where did you get the weight?

Yes Ahremck, your explanation does sound very plausible. From studying the pwt it does not have any digits.

The photograph does do the actual signature justice however, I will try the tulip idea and also try under a lit glass table. I also tried the advice provided by Kevin's link, perhaps I did not tilt it towards the light correctly.

Ross, I got the weight from an antique fair in Shoreham-By-Sea, Brighton way.

Many thanks,
Jack

Well that is conclusive Jack, the initials are definitely MR.

Two Three Four Australian artists:-

MR = Marilyn Raw (mentioned in Ausglass - 2006)
MR = Mezza Rijsdyk(mnetioned Ausglass 1983)
MR = May Rosas(mentioned Ausglass 2009)
MR = Matthew Ryan(mentioned Ausglass 2007)

Of these I would suggest only Mezza Rijsdyk or Matthew Ryan are realistic possibilities.  The latter because I have a perfume of his which I believe has much more age than the date above.  I doubt that either is the maker but if you are stuck they may be a possible avenue for research.

Thanks Ahremck, what a tongue twister  'Mezza Rijsdyk'.

I have done a little bit of research online cannot find any examples of their glass. However, I did find some great designers on http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dqCi_cLvtdg - which is worth saving for reference.

I also found a great website for paperweight/glass reference which I will post in the relevant section of the forum. (and is linked to the video)
