Murano Bird
« on: September 25, 2011, 07:31:02 PM »
I have this rather simple little bird. It is 3 3/4" (9.5 cm) long. There are pale green spots and streaks inside and it's peppered with gold. The label on bottom has an outline similar to early Seguso VdA paper labels, but nothing is visible. Maybe some of the other animals folks on the group will have an idea about this bird. The main characteristic that makes it stand out is the block-like tail with the central green streak. Does anyone recognize the design?

Such a sweet little bird Anita,  I don't recognise the tail style,  but I will take time to look through all the avenues on glass birds I have and see what I might come up with.  :X:

Four companies that I know of did these block style tail -- Seguso VdA, Archimede Seguso, VAMSA, and Barovier & Toso. Others may have, too. The color in the middle of the tail makes me favor Barovier & Toso or VAMSA, but the label, bill, and size makes me favor Seguso VdA. It could just be a stock label, though, so not be any help in attributing. I can tell that it is old -- late 1930-40s most likely.

I would say Seguso as I have 2 birds that are almost identical by the company

Perhaps ypu would be good enough to show us pictures of your lovely birds Dean with labels or signatures to show authenticity. Then Anita can put the identification to rest.
In the meantime, I am still looking for you Anita, but have not yet found any reference with authentic labels or signatures, only pictues of birds purporting to be Archimede Seguso, and I am sure you have seen all of those.

Thank you, Dean. It was one of my first thoughts for the bird because of its size and shape. Do your birds have labels? If they do and you are interested, I would love to put them in the Murano Zoo.
