Who made this bird? Cenedese? ID = Toikka for Iittala
« on: August 07, 2011, 11:50:38 PM »
Hi All - as some of you might know I am not a fan of murano animals and I have avoided them like the plague up to now. I bought this bird http://cgi.ebay.com.au/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=260827161428&ssPageName=STRK:MEWAX:IT
today and this is my sort of animal. Have no idea who made it but a friend of mine has a Cenedese vase that uses a similar technique.

Anita???? any ideas - Anyone else know about this odd little number?

Looks like an Oiva Toikka (Iitalla) bird out of Finland. If it is Toikka, it is a better find than Cenedese when it comes to value. I don't know why, since the Toikka birds are made abundantly and are contemporary. People like them and pay fairly well for them.

I have seen a few birds on eBay that look like Toikka, but are attributed to someone else. Maybe someone can look that knows Iitalla glass better. We need to switch this one to the general glass group (or the Scandinavian) so other people can have a look.

Well done again Anita found it in http://www.designed-in-finland.com/glass_toikkabirds.php and it states it is a long tailed duck in production since 1981.

This will be a one off as I don't plan to become a bird collector but I do like this.

You made an excellent buy, Ardy. Very, very good price for the bird. You'll have to take a picture when it arrives and put it on the thread. Always sad when the eBay link vanishes.

Just looked up Fugl Alli. I found the fugl means bird. I wonder if the second word is A11i or Alli. I bet it has to do with Iitalla.

Just a query from a person who lives in Melbourne, Australia not Melbourne , Florida.  Is your Ebay being flooded by material from overseas?  We used to get only about 300 to 400 items per day added to glass.  Recently it is between 1400 to 2000 mainly from the USA & GB but also from places like Denmark & Sweden.

I notice this bird is on Ebay.com.au (Australia)   :spls:

You can change the settings of your searches and cut out the listings that are not in your area. Postage is expensive between the the US and Australia, so I can see why you would want to do this. In the case of the Toikka bird, Ardy got a good deal, even with the postage, so it paid off.

Glad there was a bird just like yours on the page you showed, ardy. Always nice to get documentation. When you get the bird, please let me know how heavy it feels. They look feather light, but I suspect they're heavy. I've never held one.

Ross -  Australian ebay has been losing sellers at a large rate, one of the strategies to make the site continue to look large is by changing the default search to be worldwide (sellers who will deliver to Australia). Ebay australia have been very high handed and are now paying for it. Mind you they still get ridiculous prices for glass.

Hmmm. I'd noticed that not many people are selling, and that there seem to be a few bargains around. Ardy, is that eBay's high handedness, or is it just retain (& possibly collecting) going south? I note that the ABC has cancelled Collectors.

Ross, if you go to advanced search and choose choose items located in Australia, but don't set a search term, then you get what we used to see.

Cathy - Didn't realise that Collectors had been cancelled. :help:

I was referring to sellers generally and not specifically glass.  I read a bunch of posts on ebay and most were very negative about ebay's treatment of sellers ie feedback profiles, inability to set a reserve etc etc and so it went on and on. One poster claimed that 35% (I think) of sellers had left ebay OZ.

I don't sell much so it has little impact on me.

I have noticed that ebay OZ murano is often amongst the highest watch count in the world and also makes strong money compared to ebay USA.
