Strathearn or Caithness?
« on: August 09, 2011, 12:52:32 PM »
This paperweight (see link below) looks like Caithness Maydance to me despite a Strathearn label on it. In all the years I have collected Strathearn paperweights (with a lot of help from Richard More's website and Ysart Glass,) I have never seen a Strathearn paperweight of this design. Obviously, labels can come loose and be reattched to the wrong paperweights which is what I think may have happened here - or have I got it wrong. Did Strathearn make this paperweight?

Perhaps you should ask what the label actually says, as there's no pic. Seems rather pricey whatever.

It is identical to May Dance Magenta, though seller says it has Strathearn label on it, and I cannot find this design on Richard More's site or on Scotland's Glass under Strathearn, only under Caithness.

The seller doesn't actually say what label it has on it.

I have contacted them and they confirm it is a Strathearn label - however, labels aren't always original to the weights they find themselves on.

I saw the advert, and concluded it was a Caithness 'Maydance' with the wrong label. And I am 1000% convinced that is the correct attribution.

Seller is not happy that I have pointed out the error in the listing (albeit that I was exceedingly polite and friendly). Refuses to believe me, calling me a liar. I even supplied links to ID sites but to no avail. Why are people so ungrateful.

I think the issue comes back to 'A little knowledge is a dangerous thing', and a few people do not like being informed of the limitations of their limited knowledge. Many do though, and are grateful for advice: I have just corresponded with another seller, who has corrected their advert, and even asked for advice about another paperweight that they plan to sell.

The seller of the 'Strathearn' has a number of other items listed, and has used their limited knowledge to set what one might think are 'very strong' prices.
