new glass wiki
« on: August 14, 2011, 09:21:10 AM »
Hello all,

About half a year ago I started to set up a new encyclopedic website about the craft of glass making. This website can be found at http://www.glass-wiki.net/ and is supported by a freeware wiki system (Screwturn) that enables everyone to set up an account and add/modify the articles.

Why a new wiki, when there is already wikipedia.org?
  • wikipedia.org is not confined to a single subject, so its contents may quickly drift from the subject of glass making and design. Also, there is not really a sense of a glass community at wikipedia.org.
  • There is no real structure to the information.
  • Overviews of glassworks and/or artists are very incomplete, focusing on only the big names.
  • There are hardly any pictorial examples.

  • Glass-wiki.net tries to do a better job in that it is clearly aimed at glass art & craft, not trying to cover adjacent subjects like art history, ceramics or window glass. It also tries to simplify the process of finding information by providing a clear structure: http://www.glass-wiki.net/Glass-wiki-net-overview.ashx

Currently it already has - i think - the best overview of contemporary and historic glassworks. Although most of the references are still in "red", which means the subject is not covered yet. An example of such a "glassworks page": http://www.glass-wiki.net/Daum.ashx. It might look finished, but being part of a wiki, it actually never is. Everyone is free to add/modify the information on this subject. Of course there is some form of quality control to guarantee the correctness and coherence of the information provided.

Everyone interested in the subject is invited to make an account and share his or her knowledge. Since I have hardly any knowledge on e.g. english or american glass making, anyone that can fill in those gaps is especially encouraged to go have a look  ;)

    Remember: it's work in progress...

Good idea but it really needs to force details of all sources referenced, as per Wikipedia. If an entry lacks a reference probably best deleted.
