The Furlan piece is representative of some art glass made from the early 1950's on, ever since Sarpaneva made his non-functional orchid vase. So, to answer your question, I think this is just a nice piece of glass. Of course, I could be wrong, but I have no problem liking it without the piece being functional. My home is always happy to welcome such beautiful objects.
I wonder if Marcello is the son of Walter Furlan, a well-known Murano glass-maker.
