Topic: Murano owls and bowls etc...

Found some new stuff on the Barcelona flea market: This piece is signed Marcello Furlan 1992 and I already found some info about the artist, a Murano Glass Maker who is designing great lamps since the nineties, but this piece isn´t a vase or something similar, it is just massive Glass, clear with a Cyan Blue round swirl(worm) in sommerso technique inside, it is polished except for the top, which made me think it might be a pedestal or  just a nice piece of glass art??? Anyone has ever seen something similar?

Even cheaper (3 euros) I just had to purchase this owl (just for curiosity), anyone knows these? It has some bubbles inside, hope it´s no cheap stuff, but it´s obviously handmade(blown)...

One more question, here in Spain I stumble on lots of this kind of "center pieces", I guess they are from the sixties. Spain isn´t famous for glass, but there seemed to be some production on Mallorca back then, but they also might be imported from Italy, anyone knows something more about glass in Spain around here?

The owl in question is definitely not Murano as the use of pressed eyes into the glass is not a technique used anywhere in Venice.  This is probably Czech or maybe even Chinese but I would say Czech more than likely.  All Murano glass owls have their eyes individually made and applied while the solid body of the owls. Here a picture of one to give you some idea of what I mean and I hope this helps.

The Furlan piece is representative of some art glass made from the early 1950's on, ever since Sarpaneva made his non-functional orchid vase. So, to answer your question, I think this is just a nice piece of glass. Of course, I could be wrong, but I have no problem liking it without the piece being functional.  My home is always happy to welcome such beautiful objects.

I wonder if Marcello is the son of Walter Furlan, a well-known Murano glass-maker.

We could never figure out who Marcello's father was. Online it just had his father as a glass master. At one time I assumed it was Walter, but I haven't been able to find anywhere that says that. It would be nice to know. So many have the same last names in Murano, even when the relationship is fairly distant. Maybe Alex will drop by soon. He knows these things.

langlaugh: I know what you mean, I even like it better because it´s no functional, it somehow raises it up to the world of sculpture a bit although most of my pieces are from the 60s and this one is from 1992 I had to give it a center spot just because of its awesome wave form :mrgreen:

Muranoartglasschandel: Czech sounds good to me, I was afraid of it being chinese for the bubbles (quickly done maybe?), but then again: it has something creative and personal to it and when I go through the lists of chinese glass they offer at alibaba, these look more perfect/industrial to me :or:

Some interesting pieces and some quirky, attractive furniture in your photos. Who made the white table and chairs? Looks like Saarinen stuff.  My kind of style.  Not much like Gaudi, though.

I found an owl with this kind of tool-made eyes, this german website sells Tourist-style Murano glass... Well, it´s not vintage but at least it´s not really cheap, haha...

I need a lot of convincing that anything on that site was made in Murano. The labels I found had Made in Italy, Murano, Venezia, which usually means that it might (note the might) have been made in Italy but it wasn't made in Murano.
