mazzega murano glass paperweight with painted swan
« on: August 16, 2011, 10:49:37 AM »
Hi all,

We have this glass paperweight that is signed by mazzega murano, but I've not been able to find anything similar to it, and it doesn't seem to match their existing collections.  Can anyone confirm if it is murano glass, and roughly when it might have been made?

Thanks
KU.

Mazzega is a well known Murano name that has been attached to a few companies having made a wide variety of products for a number of years. I seem to recall that they are well known for their lighting.  I'm sure that they would have made pw at some some point.  If there's a label on the bottom, a photograph would help determining the period in which it was made.

FYI, here's a photo of their current factory.

I've not seen anything like this from Fratteli Mazzega, IVR Mazzega, or AV Mazzega. However, that doesn't mean much. If it were from AV Mazzega it would have the AV. So that rules that out. (Besides, they do lamps and table vessels.) IVR Mazzega did do quite a few animals, so maybe. Or it could have been a later Mazzega. Is there a lot of wear on bottom? Could we see the signature?

I can't figure the swan out. Is it painted, then cased over? or is it glass? This is one of the most different Murano pwts I've seen. I've not seen anything like this from the island.

I've attached a picture of the base of the paperweight.  If it is painted then it does have a layer of glass over it.  Other than that its a solid glass paperweight.

The signature looks very real. I found this Mazzega pw that has a construct similar to yours: http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/MURANO-MAZZEGA-MILLEFIORI-PAPERWEIGHT-/320725932480. The label on the eBay one is a mid-century Mazzega label. I am not quite sure if it is a later Fratelli Mazzega label or an early IVR Mazzega label. F'lli Mazzega reorganized into IVR around 1950.

I personally feel confident that you have a pw of the best Mazzega line, and that is from around 1950 -- not sure of the date, since I have not been able to find a date on the M-style Mazzega label.
