Collectors fair finds today ? early Mdina? piece2
« on: August 21, 2011, 01:58:31 PM »
Also bought this amethyst vase / bottle with stopper from the same seller. Unmarked base, lots of wear. Amethyst body mottled with tiny sand coloured flecks and a couple of streaks. Stopper top is blues and greens but the inner core of the stem is the same amethyst as the body so I think it is original.

5 Inches or  12.5 cm tall with stopper. 11cm or 4 1/2 inches wide. Circular polished pontil mark .

Is this possibly also an early piece?

Thanks for looking - will post more photos next

Again, very early, Michael Harris/ Boffos period.

Lovely thing, isn't it?

Thanks Sue - I thought it was!  my gut instincts seem to have been working today!

The seller even reduced the price because it wasn't marked Mdina  >:D

Reading those books I bought seems to be paying off!

These "ink pots" come in several heights and two shapes. There is this shape, with very rounded top and bottom shoulders and a rounded side too - the other shape has sharper corners and very straight sides.
They come with either polished-out round or oval pontil marks; or a completely flat polished base - often with a deep scar in it.
Sometimes, "Mdina" is etched in the polished rondel - in either Michael Harris' or Eric Dobson's writing.

It's a real shame these don't photograph as well as they look in reality.
Cheers, Sue M. (she/her)

Sue - Do you know how long these ink bottles were produced for...? Would the mid 70s be correct in terms of when they stopped being produced..?

Thanks
Greg

Thanks Sue

I have another ink pot in blues and greens but without a stopper, which is signed Mdina glass to the base by Michael Harris -identified on here a while back. These two are exactly the same shape and height. I keep thinking I am seeing a signature on the bottom of the amethyst pot, but there is so much base wear it is hard to tell. Probably not - just wishful thinking!
