Hi all
I found this a few weeks ago and really liked him, ive so far been unable to find one the same or even similar.
As soon as i saw him I had Antonio Da Ros (Daros) for Cenedese in my mind. The blue core in the main body appears to be the same colour as jons Da Ros fish. Plus the alexandrite and coloured core's seem to be in quite a few of his pieces.
He is a fair size weighing in a 1160g, 16cm nose to bottom.
unfortunitly the head is not uranium, but the body glows bright orange with the UV (manganese?)
Am I headed in the right direction?
many thanks
michelle

Michelle, your snail looks a lot like the Salviati snails. There is one of the large ones in orange at http://www.rubylane.com/item/200721-2008-67/Salviati-Murano-Art-glass-Snail. These were done in a couple of different sizes -- big and huge -- and a lot of different colors. Yours has the coil on the opposite side as the Ruby Lane (RL) one, but that could just be a variation. I have a picture of a blue spotted snail like the design on RL that has a label. The picture isn't mine. I'll email you a picture of it so you can compare the shape and head.

This doesn't mean that it definitely isn't Cenedese. I've seen a lot of the animals done by Salviati and Cenedese that look so much alike. You can check the pictures and see what you think. Most of the Cenedese snails I've seen have vertical spirals, instead of off to the side. However, I am sure I haven't seen all the Cenedese snails. For your snail I would say that it is probably Salviati, but leave the door open that it is Cenedese.

Hi Anita,
Comparing it to the pictures you sent me i would say its a match. The coil on mine seems to be less pointy, although the style of the coil is the same, the head is exactly the same.
The orange one appears that the coil has actually been made from coiling the glass, whereas mine looks like the coil has been tooled.
Thanks for taking the time to help

The biggest difference I could see was the coil was on a different side, like mirror images. The roundness of the uncoiled side looks alike, so I think it is just a variation of the design. The head doesn't continue under the body and there is no tail, so they do look a lot alike. The orange snail does look a lot sharper, but the polka dot snail picture I sent looks more smooth like yours.

It's a great snail. The price on the orange snail has come down in this market. They are normally valued higher. We had another big snail on the board a year or two ago and someone referred to this picture. I'll have to do a search to see if I can find the message.

...
And here it is.

Thanks so much Anita. I think your right, I dont know how long a period these where made, but there is likely to be variations due to the nature of it being hand made.
After your fab input, I am almost certain he is Salviati
many thanks again

Hi all,
Just thought I would add this new information on this snail. Ive just seen a stickered example on facebook he appears to be a Livio Seguso snail. The stickered example is identical to mine apart from the head is a smokey cloloured glass whereas mine is light green. Unfortunitly cant add a picture as its not mine but will ask the person who owns it if they could possibly send me the picture, or add one here
for those of you on facebook you may be able to view here

And here I am with pictures of my labeled 6" (15 cm) long snail. I've seen this shape for Salviati, Cenedese, and now Livio Seguso snails. Livio worked with Salviati in the 1960s before leaving to form his own company. I suspect that Livio is involved in the snails that were made at the three companies -- either that or someone copied the design. I have seen some paperweight birds that were made both at Cenedese and Salviati, so I think there was a link between them c 1970 that involved Livio. What it was, I don't know.

I hope someone can give some information on the label. I assume it is Livio Seguso because of the snail design, but I never trust my assumptions.

Something I just considered -- what if this is a store sticker, instead of a company sticker? We may need to hold back on who did the snail for sure until we learn something about the sticker.
